This film is a living science fiction animation created with real growing plants. The time-lapse scenes unfold with timed electromechanical sets that move and transform in the same slow temporality as plants grow. Filmed and cultivated for four years, the film follows plants struggles in a world of changing sets. Plants are shown being active agents and dramatic actors, instead of being shown as pretty flowering time lapse subjects. Each scene has a starting point which plants then shape, guiding the scene to a next one. What emerges is an unexpectedly dramatic arc: scenes shift from romance to despair, from destruction toward rebirth, as plants are seeking their way back home. The film is guided by rhythm and transformation rather than a linear plot.

Elokuva on elävä animaatio oikeiden kasvien kanssa. Kohtaukset on rakennettu ajastettujen sähkömekaanisten lavasteiden kanssa liikkumaan samassa hitaassa ajassa kasvien kanssa. Elokuvaa on kasvatettu ja kuvattu noin 4 vuotta. Elokuvalla halusin kuvata kasveja kuin näyttelijöitä ja etsiä suuria hetkiä ja tunteita. Kasvit itse johdattivat kohtaukset loppuun ja seuraavan alkuun. Kasvit olivatkin hyvin dramaattisia näyttelijöitä. Kasvit esitetään aktiivisina toimijoina eikä passiivisina, vain kauniisti kukkivina kohteina. Tieteisfiktiomaiset kohtaukset kulkevat romanssin kautta epätoivoon ja tuhosta uuteen nousuun. Kasvit etsivät tällä matkalla kotiaan. Elokuvaa ohjaavat rytmi, kesto ja muodonmuutos pikemminkin kuin lineaarinen juoni.

Various plants grow in the cultivation basin, and above them mechanical arms move within the same slow sense of time, appearing either to nurture or to control the plants. As the video progresses, the plants take over the arms and use them to rise to new heights.

Within a confined area, one real plant and one fake plant grow, the fake plant being an electric wire that grows at the same rate as the real plant. The plants spread through the space and eventually encounter each other.

In the video, a plant grows inside a space-capsule-shaped chamber. A light rotates around the chamber with a 48-hour cycle. At times, the light passes behind red filters, creating a short night for the plant. The plant grows according to its own kind of circadian rhythm, which is not typical on Earth. The experiment acclimates the plant to the daily rhythms of other celestial bodies’ orbits. The experiment is shown in the video twice with two different plants. If we want to go into space, we must take plants with us.

Videolla kasvi kasvaa avaruuskapselin muotoisessa tilassa. Tilan ympärillä kiertää valo 48 tunnin kiertonopeudella kapselia ympäri. Valo kiertää välillä punaisten kalvojen edestä luoden kasville lyhyen yön. Kasvi kasvaa omanlaisessa vuorokausirytmissä, joka ei ole tyypillinen maapallolla. Koe totuttaa kasvia muiden taivaankappaleiden kiertoratojen vuorokausirytmiin. Koe tapahtuu videolla 2 kertaa eri kasveilla. Jos haluamme mennä avaruuteen, meidän täytyy ottaa kasvit mukaamma.

Plants grow in the middle of a space where light comes from three different angles. The entire structure has been rotated at regular intervals, so that the top and bottom sides change to three different positions. In the video, this is visible in the changes in the plants' growth direction.

Labyrinth was growing with plants for 5 months. I wanted to see what kind of solutions would plants find growing through labyrinth. They would have to make choices. During this time there was several changes of power, drama and death, but also new young ones which would eventually take over.

Labyrintissä kasvoi kilpailevia kasveja 5:n kuukauden ajan. Halusin nähdä millaisia valintoja kasvit tekevät edetessään labyrintissä. 5:n kuukauden aikana tapahtui paljon draamaa, kasvukilpailuja, vahvimman kasvin valloittaessa tilan tukahduttaen muut, saman vahvemman kasvin kuihtuminen ja nuorempien kasvien nousu ja tilan valloitus.
